conduit: (1) A raceway of circular cross-section. (2) A structure containing one or more ducts. NOTE: For the purposes of this Standard the term conduit includes electrical metallic tubing (EMT) or electrical non-metallic tubing (ENT). distributor enclosure: A case or housing designed to contain Distributor A, Distributor B or Distributor C. duct: 1) A single enclosed raceway for conductors or cables (See also conduit, raceway). 2) A single enclosed raceway for wires or cables usually used in soil or concrete. 3) An enclosed air flow path, generally part of the HVAC system of a building , encryption: The coding or scrambling of information so that it can only be decoded and read by someone who has the correct decoding key. entrance room or space (telecommunications): A space in which the joining of inter or intra building telecommunications cabling takes place. NOTE: An entrance room may also serve as a distributor room. equipment outlet: Outermost connection facility in a hierarchical star topology. intelligent building system: Equipment and telecommunications infrastructure that supports monitoring, control, operation and management of building services. non-removable: Unable to be disconnected or taken away from the area without damage to the objects to which they were attached. pathway: A facility for the placement of telecommunications cable.
protected distribution system: A telecommunications system with adequate mechanical, electrical, electromagnetic and acoustic safeguards to permit use for the transmission of sensitive information. pull box: A housing located in a pathway run used to facilitate the placing of wire or cables. secure area: Area that provides physical security to prevent access by unauthorized personnel. space (telecommunications): An area used for housing the installation and termination of telecommunications equipment and cable. splice box: An enclosed space between pathways intended to house a cable splice. star topology: A topology in which telecommunications cables are distributed from a central point. vault (telecommunications): An enclosure, typically cast concrete, used to protect telecommunications infrastructure or equipment. vetted: Investigated and approved for access to a given level of sensitive infrastructure or information zone box: An enclosure used to house one or more of the following; a) a consolidation point, b) a horizontal connection point, C) equipment outlets.
The overview presented in this clause is intended to assist in developing the role of physical network security as part of the overall security plan. This Standard provides guidance limited to aspects of physical network (infrastructure) security. The overall plan may require protection of the physical network and its infrastructure, and protection of supported systems in order to protect other assets. Use of this Standard will assist as a part of the overall security plan. The use of data protection methods such as encryption, and implementing processes and procedures defining other security roles can also be used but are outside the scope of this Standard. Some other security considerations that are outside the scope of this Standard include practices that address protections from non-contact cable tapping, audio, visual or RF snooping in addition to other forms of unauthorized monitoring. The basic process of developing a security plan for cabling infrastructure involves performing a risk assessment to identify the security needs (security risk level) and matching the risk to the appropriate security level described in this Standard. There may be multiple authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ) involved in the assessment of security impacts to a system, facility or user. It is important to identify the various AHJs involved in the risk assessment, as well as their areas of expertise, responsibility and authority.ANSI TIA 5017 pdf download.
