3.9 operator-presence control (OPC): A control designed so that it will automatically interrupt power to a drive when the operator’s actuating force is removed. 3.10 operator zone: An area from which an individual operator can safely control the spltting operation. 3.11 safety sign: Information affixed to a machine to alert persons of the hazards that may cause personal injury, if not followed. 3.12 shall: The word“shall” is to be understood as a requirement. 3.13 should: The word“should” is to be understood as a recommendation. 3.14 95h percentile man: For information on physical dimensions of operators, see ISO 3411. 4 Machine identification The log splitter shall be provided with a label containing the following information: a) Name of the manufacturer or supplier; b) Markings that uniquely identify the machine (such as, model and/or serial number), and; c) Contact information for a source of replacement parts. 5 Controls 5.1 Control identification The following controls, if provided, engine (motor) speed, engine (motor) shut-off, log spltting shall be identified by a durable label as to direction of operation and function. Universal symbols, as illustrated in SAE J1362, ASABE/ISO 3767-1, and ISO 3767-3, may be used. 5.1.1 ldentification shall be located near the control position and be legible to the operator. 5.1.2 ldentification using lettering shall use a minimum letter height of 3 mm (0.115 in).5.2 Shut-off control device A shut-off control device shall be provided to stop operation of the engine (motor), and shall not depend on a sustained manual effort for its operation. The shut-off control device can be a function of the operator presence control. This device shall require manual and intentional activation in order to restart the engine (motor). 5.3 Splitting control The machine shall have an operator presence control (OPC) for its spltting function. For controls that move in the same direction as the ram or wedge, they shall move forward on horizontal machines and downward on vertical machines for the splitting action. Hand-operated splitting controls (excludes power source controls) shall provide a minimum of 70 mm (2.75 in) of clearance in all directions from the control and throughout the operating range. The control’s function and direction shall be identified by a durable label. Operator zone 6.1 An operator zone shall be designated for each powered unit and its location shall be ilustrated in the operator’s manual. 6.2 Splitting control(s) shall meet the requirements of 5.3 and be located so that the operator while in the operator zone can operate the log splitter, as specified by the operator’s manual, without being exposed to unexpected contact with a log or the moving wedge or ram.7 Stability Wheel-supported units detached from the towing vehicle and non-wheel-supported units shall meet the following requirements for both transport and operating conditions. 7.1 Test requirements When applicable, the following requirements shall apply for all log-splitter tire combinations specified by the log-spltter manufacturer: 1) All measurements shall be made under static conditions. 2) No attachment or ballast shall be added to the log spltter. 3) Pneumatic tires shall be inflated to the pressure recommended in the operator’s manual for normal operation. 4) All wheels shall be locked to prevent rotation about the axle.ANSI B71.7  pdf download.
